In some countries Lombok is assigned as a malaria area and it is recommended to take malaria medication.
West-Lombok is comparable to Bali when it comes to malaria and Bali is not assigned as malaria area. We can, however, not claim that we are completely malaria free. There are very few mosquitos in our area and we use insecticides throughout our property. If you are planning on staying the night at one of the Gili islands, or in the eastern part of Lombok, malaria medication is advised.
During nightfall the mosquitos are most active. This is also when the use of mosquito repellant or covering your skin is recommended. We advise the use of Sofell, a mosquito repellent that can be bought cheap at the local supermarket. We find it more effective than the expensive repellent you buy at home.
If you do wish to use malaria medication, make sure you inform yourself well about the different options. Some may have side effects, so it is recommended to try them out at home to see how you react.
